Decades after the events of The Last Lantern, the island of Aokujima has changed. The harbor shrine still stands — but now it is surrounded by a neon boardwalk of beach bars and dive shops that treat the shrine as a tourist relic. The lantern stencil is still in the family. It has just never been used.

The Story

The Island Answers Through Reflection

Kaede — Luma's niece, heir to the brass bell and the lantern stencil — sings two nights a week at the boardwalk bar. She knows the old festival song from family memory but has never sung it at the shrine. In Neon Tide, she crosses that line. The island answers not through geological phenomena or supernatural spectacle — but through reflections, lantern callbacks, and forgotten boardwalk signage that begins to rearrange itself into something that looks a great deal like a message.

The emotional arc: restless deflection → grief surfacing under neon → ritual attempt at the shrine → the island answers → resolved attention. The story is never complete until it is shared.

Mid 20s

Inherited the lantern stencil and the brass bell from Luma. Sings at the boardwalk bar, plays guitar with calloused fingertips. Has not lit a lantern at the shrine herself yet — that is the line she crosses in this film.

Appearance

Dark hair cropped at the jaw, one indigo streak. Muted indigo top with one faded neon-pink stripe. Brass bell from Luma at her hip on the same worn leather cord from Film A.

YUTO

Boardwalk bartender · childhood friend · gentle antagonist

Mid 20s

Runs the boardwalk bar his older brother started. Loves Kaede in a steady, unannounced way. Believes the lantern ritual was beautiful but is over. His arc ends in witness — not interruption.

Appearance

Broad-shouldered, short black hair, warm tired eyes. Plain white t-shirt under indigo bar apron. Simple silver wristband. Never branded.

Sun-bleached, preserved as a family relic inside Kaede's guitar case. Not worn — held.

The shrine is continuity-locked to Film A: same pier geometry, same lantern hook positions, same cedar railing. Only the boardwalk surrounding it has changed.
